We inherit more definitions of a good life than we ever get to choose ourselves — from family, from faith, from the particular street we grew up on. This chapter asks which of those definitions were actually ours, and which we simply never got around to questioning. It is not an argument for rejecting inheritance. It is an argument for inspecting it honestly, piece by piece, before building anything permanent on top of it.
